- NME Photographer

Tina Korhonen – also known as ‘Tina K’ – is a freelance portrait, music and editorial photographer working for various magazines, and record and clothing labels. She is mainly an editorial photographer, but she also does promotional, fashion, hair and beauty, glamour, events, advertising and commercial photography.
Finnish-born Tina started taking pictures early on with her father’s camera, Canon AE-1. Her father is a keen amateur landscape photographer. Although Tina learned most of her skills by herself, with help from her father and by doing some short courses in camera clubs, she decided to take a course at the London College of Printing when she moved to the UK in 2000. She also has an MA in Human Geography from the University of Helsinki.
After completing the course, she initially worked in a picture library, before becoming a full-time freelance music photographer. Tina remembers the end of that era well: “I was sacked from the picture library for ‘my own good’ because I was always changing my hours to accommodate NME’s demands! Apparently my boss was doing me a favour and he also gave me a bonus in my last pay packet for my digital camera fund! So, I can’t really blame him for anything. He saw where my heart was and that I could do it.” This was a real kick-start for Tina’s career.
Tina’s work has been published in many magazines and newspapers, including Acoustic, Alternative Press, Bizarre, Big Cheese, Classic Rock, Decibel (US), Drummer Magazine, French Vogue, Guitar Buyer, Guitarist, Helsingin Sanomat (Finland), The Independent, Kerrang!, Metal Hammer, Metro, NME, Observer Music Monthly, Practical Photography, Rolling Stone, Rumba (Finland), Terrorizer, First Magazine, The Sun and Smash Hits. She currently works for many of them directly. She is also presented by the Getty Images picture agency.
Outside of editorial work, Tina’s current clients include Rodrigo y Gabriela, Gretsch Guitars, Toxico Clothing, Yamaha and High Grade Productions. Her pictures have been used in books, record covers and sleeves and posters. Tina's pictures can be seen in as places as varied as on Cradle of Filth T-shirts, in Gretsch guitar marketing and promotion, on The Hives’ tour posters and in Vogue.
Tina’s photography has been featured in the British Journal of Photography (09/2001), Practical Photography (09/2005 with an eight-page feature and on two other occasions), Kameralehti (04/2006), Helsingin Sanomat and Rumba (July 2007), as well as smaller pieces about her exhibitions in Kerrang! and Bizarre in 2005. She has also been a critic in Practical Photography (rating readers’ photos).
Recently she has been working with retro hair stylist and hat maker Nina Butkovic-Budden to create unique and realistic 1940s and 1950s images and fashion shoots with attitude.
